From the Greek name Αικατερινη (Aikaterine). The etymology is debated: it could derive from the earlier Greek name ‘Εκατερινη (Hekaterine), which came from ‘εκατερος (hekateros) "each of the two"; it could derive from the name of the goddess HECATE; it could be related to Greek αικια (aikia) "torture"; or it could be from a Coptic name meaning "my consecration of your name". The Romans associated it with Greek καθαρος (katharos) "pure" and changed their spelling from Katerina to Katharina to reflect this.

The name belonged to a 4th-century saint and martyr from Alexandria who was tortured on the famous Catherine wheel. Another saint by this name was Catherine of Siena, a 14th-century mystic. Katherine Anne "Kitty" Pryde was born in Deerfield, Illinois to Carmen and Theresa Pryde. She and her parents moved to New York City at when she was just seven years old. Kitty started to have headaches at age thirteen, headaches which signaled the emergence of her mutant powers.

She was recruited for Professor Xavier's School for Gifted Mutants by Ororo Munroe and had previously attended school there until it was raided by William Stryker's military group. She returned shortly in a role much closer to TA than actual student when the school was rebuilt and developed a romantic interest in fellow student, Robert "Bobby" Drake.

After joining the battle the X-Men fought at Alcatraz Island to eliminate a secret Mutant cure and protect the world from the power of the Phoenix, housed in her old teacher and occasional mentor, Dr. Jean Grey---Kitty returned to the school and attended the funeral of the man who recruited her originally, Charles Xavier (who had been eliminated by the Phoenix, along with Scott Summers, her math teacher and last leader of the X-Men).

What is not known is that prior to the Phoenix debacle, Kitty had gotten into a fight with Professor Xavier regarding her involvement with the X-Men. He felt she was unprepared for battle and too innocent as well. As a result she was not speaking to him up until the time he died and has regretted it ever since--and hasn't mentioned the incident to anyone.

With Storm as the new Headmistress of the Xavier Institute, she allowed Kitty to continue her education at her own pace to help with her greiving process and when she took a sabbatical of sorts to work at Kansas State University, Kitty took the GED behind her back and applied to follow her, having nothing left at the Mansion to keep her there---except a fledgling mentorship with Wolverine and bad memories.
